Geometry and Classroom Reflection

Geometry
1.  Did you study for this Geometry test?  If so, what did you do, and for how long? Did your score meet your expectations, exceed your expectations, or fall short?

2.  If you were to give yourself a fair mark for this Geometry unit (based upon your understanding, not your test score), what would you give yourself and why?

3.  Which concepts in this unit were the most difficult to understand? What made these concepts more difficult?  What could you have done (or your teacher) to better understand these topics?

Classroom
1.  Do you feel challenged in this class? If so, what makes the class challenging? If not, what could be done differently to challenge you?

2.  Do you feel supported in this class? What are some things the teacher does well in teaching or supporting you?  What are some things the teacher does not do as well and could improve upon?

3.  Are you performing to your expectation thus far in Grade 8? Why or why not?  What could you do differently to improve your understanding in Mathematics?

4.  Next unit:  Linear Functions (Algebra)!  Set at least one goal for next term.  This goal may not be about test scores or grades.

    1. I mainly just reviewed some of the angle worksheets and a few of the terminology. I am happy with my score.
    3. I found the similar triangle problems complicated at first, but when I thought about the ratios and their relations, it started to get easier.

    Classroom
    1. Sometimes I feel challenged in class, but it is otherwise manageable and I overcome the challenging concepts well.
    2. I feel supported in this class by both students and the teacher.
    3. I am happy and content with my performance rate this year and I hope to keep it up.

  2. I did study for the geometry test. I did not spend a big amount of time on it yet I still went through the sheets and notes. I meet my expectations as I was fairly confident with the topic. The concept of all the vocabulary confused me a little but the constant use of it in class made me more confident with it. I did feel challenged in this topic as we had to go further than just solve the question as we had to prove different theorems. I felt quite supported as the teacher would explain the concept until everyone understood it. Also if we got stuck they would willingly help us. I think that so far I have been meeting my expectations in Grade 8. I think that I could read the questions properly in the future as I lost some marks as I did not completely follow the question. For the next unit, I would like to read the questions with more attention to make sure I am doing the right thing.

    1. A little bit on the angle worksheets and the circle theorems. I also revised on the main points on the angles and about exterior angles and supplementary angles. I studied for around 45 minutes on the day before the test a little over 20 minutes on the day before that. I am not too happy with my results but I know that my mistakes weren’t because I didn’t revise on it but it was mainly because I did not read the questions carefully and was careless when checking over my answers.
    3. The concepts of the test weren’t so difficult as I ave done this last year but doing circle theorems was new to me and I guess that was the most difficult for me.
    Classroom
1.I do sometimes feel challenged in class by some of the extension work or the work which needs a lot of logic.
    2. I do feel supported in this class through both my teachers and friends around me as if I dont low something, I can ask my friends first then ask my teacher.
    3. I do feel that I am performing well in Grade 8 so far except for my tests as I dont get the highest mark that I can.
    4. For the nest topic, I really want to do very well in the next test or to get a better understanding of Linear functions as that is not my strongest topic.

    Geometry;

    1. I studied a while for the algebra test, but for no longer than a half-hour, I feel that I should have studied longer, and I had hoped for a higher score.

    3. At first I found some circle theorems hard to conceive, for example the arrow in the circle. I did not understand this well at first, but Mr. Jobe did a good job of explaining it, and the reasoning from other students helped.

    Classroom;

    1. In class I feel that I am regularly challenged, but find most work is not too hard to complete.

    2. I feel that any support I need in class is present. Wether it is from other class mates or the teacher, I feel that they do a good job in aiding me and/or explaining me the questions.

    3. I feel that so far I have done decently well in maths this year, but that I can do better. I think that if I start to revise regularly, I would benefit greatly.

I studied for the Geometry test, but not in excess. I tried to take in all I could from lessons, so I only reviewed my class notes for about 25 minutes to study for the test. My score on both my quiz and my unit test met my expectations. With the amount of effort that I had put it in during the unit, I think it met my expectations.
The concepts in this unit that were the most difficult to understand was probably proving circle theorems, as it involved a lot of algebra, which isn’t my strong point. I just don’t really to connect to algebra. In order to understand these topics better, I should’ve studied them a little more in my spare time. Towards the end, I started to understand these concepts much better, so I found them easier on the test.

    Classroom
I feel the right amount of challenge in this class this year, because there is a fair mix of students and activities that help me push myself further. Some concepts that I learn this year, I find challenging, but the teacher and other students help me and challenge to understand it and solve them.
I feel extremely supported in our Math class this year. Something that the teacher does well in supporting me is to let students themselves explain solutions to the problem at the front of the class, because it builds confidence.
I think that I am performing just about to my expectation in Grade 8. I find myself in a much more challenging class than the previous year, as I wasn’t really pushed much last year. This year, my expectations are increasing as the challenges set increase. I just feel that in one or two quizzes, I didn’t give my full potential, and maybe slacked off in studying during my spare time, which reflected on my scores. In order to improve my understanding in Mathematics, I think that I could spend extra time at home to put in the effort to understand concepts I am unsure about. This would greatly help me.
Liner Function goal: To understand more concepts, by spending more time at home.

  6. 1. Geometry - I studied for the test about 30 minutes. I got a better score than I expected.
    3. I think the tangent of a circle was difficult. I should have revised more about it.

    1. I felt challenged in this class, but I could have been more active than before.
    2. I learned a lot in many ways. The teacher helped me a lot.
    3. I think I could participate more than now.

  7. Geometry:

    1. I did study for the Geometry Test. I studied Circle Theorems, Angle Facts in Parallel Lines, Angle Vocabulary terms and other topics. I spent around 1-2 hours studying for the test. My average test score met my expectations. I did well in Part 1 and 2, but could have done better in Part 3.

    3. I found some Circle Theorems a bit hard to understand at the start. It became more difficult since I was slow at grasping and understanding them, while the teacher moved on to the next one. To better understand these topics, I could have concentrated harder and keep trying to understand it better.

    Classroom:

    1. Yes, I do feel challenged in this classroom, and what challenges me are some difficult problems I need to keep thinking about and trying to solve until I get it. I personally think this is a good thing, as I like to be challenged which makes me better at the topic.

    2. I strongly feel very supported in this class, both by my peers and my teacher. The teacher always helps me when in doubt, and helps me build on ideas on how to tackle problems the right way.

    3. I am performing well up to my expectation in Grade 8 as I feel I am understanding concepts well and thinking over problems. However, there is always scope for improvement and I can practice more problems to build on my understanding in Mathematics.

    4. My goal is that I get a test score in Linear Algebra which I am happy with and which has met my expectation.

    1.  Did you study for this Geometry test?  If so, what did you do, and for how long? Did your score meet your expectations, exceed your expectations, or fall short?
I did study for this Geometry test. I solved some problems in the past Geometry test sheets. I studied for 20 minutes. The score exceeded my expectations.

    3.  Which concepts in this unit were the most difficult to understand? What made these concepts more difficult?  What could you have done (or your teacher) to better understand these topics?
Using Algebra in Geometry, especially proving part, was the most difficult to understand. I haven’t done much of them before, so I tried to use Algebra more in this unit.

    Classroom
    1.  Do you feel challenged in this class? If so, what makes the class challenging? If not, what could be done differently to challenge you?
The class is challenging in some ways, because it has a lot of proving business and I am bad at it.
    2.  Do you feel supported in this class? What are some things the teacher does well in teaching or supporting you?  What are some things the teacher does not do as well and could improve upon?
I feel supported in this class. The teacher does well in supporting us, giving us hints when we are stuck. The teacher could provide us some creative problems, like the math problems in Youtube.
    3.  Are you performing to your expectation thus far in Grade 8? Why or why not?  What could you do differently to improve your understanding in Mathematics?
I am performing to (exceeding) my expectations in Grade 8, because I am getting good grades.
Next unit:  Linear Functions (Algebra)!  Set at least one goal for next term.  This goal may not be about test scores or grades.

  9. Although, I did study with my friends in the library I didn't study at home. Next time I will spend at least 1 hour revising the worksheets, since the score dipped below my expectation. I found all the concept easy, but there were just a lot I forgot some of them before the test.

I feel challenged when I am learning new concepts, but after a lesson or so I get the hang of it. I think our class environment is very supportive and positive, if I could recommend a change it would be to utilise the blog more often. I think I am doing well in keeping up with the fast paced teaching.

For the next unit I would like to further extend my knowledge in Algebra.

Did you study for this Geometry test? If so, what did you do, and for how long? Did your score meet your expectations, exceed your expectations, or fall short?

Yes, I did study for the geometry test, but not excessively. I think I studied for about 1-2 hours. My score met my expectations, but I definitely could do better next time.

    2. Which concepts in this unit were the most difficult to understand? What made these concepts more difficult? What could you have done (or your teacher) to better understand these topics?

The basic concepts were taught well during this unit, but I think we should have spent more time on the harder concepts. We spent most of our time on circle theorems which gave us less time to spend on geometry. The names of angles and finding the angles was taught really well, but there were some more advanced concepts that required a series of steps, that could be reinforced.

    Classroom

Do you feel challenged in this class? If so, what makes the class challenging? If not, what could be done differently to challenge you?

I definitely do feel challenged in this class, but more in a positive way, because I am coping up with the level of the this, but some questions and topics are a bit more challenging than others. The part that makes me feel challenged, is that once the basic concepts are taught, we learn a very wide variety of advanced concepts, which is very good and iterating, but it can sometimes get confusing.

    2. Do you feel supported in this class? What are some things the teacher does well in teaching or supporting you? What are some things the teacher does not do as well and could improve upon?

Yes, I feel very supported in this class. We can always go up to the teacher and ask if we have any queries. He is very open to help. There isn't anything that our teacher could improve on.

    3. Are you performing to your expectation thus far in Grade 8? Why or why not? What could you do differently to improve your understanding in Mathematics?

Yes, I am meeting my expectations but I can definitely do better. I think if i get more time to learn the concepts I will be able to understand better.

    1. I did study for the geometry test. I reviewed the worksheets and my notebook and solved the worksheets in the Wiki. My score met my expectation.
    3. I had studied all the things we learned in this unit before but it was a good opportunity to check the theorems and knowledges. It was my first time to proof in English so it was hard but I’ll try to be used to it.

    Classroom
    1. I feel sometimes challenged in this class. The questions are not too easy so I can always concentrate. The level is very suitable for me.
    2. I do feel supported in this class because Mr. Jobe checks our understanding in each unit.
    3. I think I’m performing as I expected and I want to keep it up in the rest of the year too.
4.I want to enjoy solving it and get a high score in the test.

  13. I revised quite thoroughly for the test, by doing several problems in the textbook and the shared worksheets. I was not very pleased with my test score as I feel that if I had read the questions more carefully and not made careless mistakes, I could’ve done much better. I didn’t find the concepts difficult to understand and I think they were taught quite well.

I sometimes do feel challenged in this class because there are many concepts which I learn for the first time but I do manage to understand and overcome any difficulties very quickly. I do feel extremely supported by both the students and the teacher and feel I have the freedom to ask any questions, if I need them. So far, I think I have done pretty well in Math but would like to do better and push myself further.

  14. I studied for the geometry test by going through and answering the revision worksheets and reading through some of the rules. I think my score could have been better, but I am satisfied with what I got. I think the most difficult to understand concepts were how to prove some of the rules we learnt.

I feel challenged in this class because a lot of the theorems are new to me. I think I have been supported by my teacher and peers. I think I am satisfied with my progress this year. I think I could push myself even more if I were to revise more out of class.

  15. Geometry:
I did study for the Geometry test. I reviewed common geometry vocabulary, angle facts, circle theorems and congruent shapes facts. I also practiced challenging problems, similar to the ones on the test. I revised for 1 - 2 hours. I was happy with my test score for Parts 1 & 2, but my Part 3 score let me down. I was expecting this to happen as I was quite rushed while I was doing the test. I think if I had more time, I could have solved the questions that I left out in Part 3.
At first, I found the similar/congruent shape problems challenging, but once I understood the concept, it quite easy to solve. Also, I found that proving the rules we learnt could be a bit difficult to understand.

    Classroom
I find that this class is quite challenging, as most of the concepts we learnt were new to me. I do think the tasks are manageable and I am able to overcome these challenges.
I feel supported by my peers and my teacher, and I feel comfortable asking for help if I need it.
I try my best in my work, but I feel like I can push myself more and do better, especially in Unit tests. I think if I spend more time practicing challenging problems, I will be able to understand them better and solve it more easily. This will help me in future tests.

Goal: I want to thoroughly understand the topic of Linear Functions, as it is a new topic for me. This will help me will more difficult problems, as I will be able to apply my learning better.

  16. GEOMETRY
I studied for this Geometry test by going through past worksheets and doing a practice part 3 test. My overall score met my expectations. I studied for a few hours in the weeks before the test.
The concepts that I found most difficult to understand were being able to prove all the types of circle theorems, and using algebra to help in geometry. Many of these proofs required the use of algebra.

    CLASSROOM
I feel challenged in this class as the work is challenging, but I can still work through it. It helps when we go through things in class and other students explain it.
I feel supported in this class as I can always get help from other students or the teacher if I am stuck or if the work is too challenging. Both the teacher and the students support me.
I am performing to my expectations so far in Grade 8, as I have studied for tests and homework. If I don't understand something, then I will spend more time on it to improve my understanding of the concepts. I can also extend myself by not limiting my learning to only what I need to know, by learning new concepts.

GOAL: To fully understand all the concepts of the new unit.

I am not challenged all the time but there are times when I do feel challenged. It helps when we go through in class and everyone has a different way of solving the same question. I feel supported in this class as I can always get help from other students or the teacher. I am performing to my expectations so far in Grade 8, as I have studied for tests and did the homework. If I don't understand something, then I can always ask the teacher for help. I can also extend myself by not limiting my learning my not only knowing the concept but understanding it.

    Geometry Test:
I did study for the geometry test. I had spent 15 minutes revising on the rules like the circle theorem. Overall I had gotten a 93 average. I wished I had scored a little more on the third part, but I am fine with a 93 average.
I think I have done well on the test. One the most difficult parts is to take all the circle theorem, the Pythagorus theorem, and the geometry rules and apply them to the question on the third part of the test.
I think that the most difficult is the last two pages which we ha to give reasons to prove the theorem we learned. One thing that I could have don’t to improve is to study the theorem and find examples to prove them.
